Radient Wellness Center Offers Yoga Teacher Training

I wanted to put in a little plug for my dear friend and one of my yoga mentors, Joan Ryan.
I have had many students ask me about yoga classes I recommend since I no longer live in Jacksonville, I think all of my previous students would enjoy Joan's enthusiasm for yoga and her expertise is well beyond mine. So...
Here is a link to her website.

I miss you all!

Breathe Your Way to Health and Wholeness

An article by Danna Faulds

In my introductory yoga class back in 1983, the first thing my Kripalu-trained teacher taught me was how to take a long, slow, smooth breath. Initially I resisted. "I may not know yoga postures," I thought impatiently, "but I certainly know how to breathe!" Accustomed to taking shallow breaths, I was amazed by how much air I took in when I followed her instructions. She then showed me how to blend a flowing breath with simple stretches. I found this pairing of movement and breath to be seamless, graceful, and surprisingly energizing. At the end of the session, tears rolled down my cheeks. Relaxation and wholeness weren’t beyond my capacity after all but as near to me as breathing.

The breath is so intimately connected with well-being that it is impossible to tease the two apart. Biology tells us that cellular respiration, the process of taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide from every cell, is linked to the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, eliminate wastes, and oxidize fuel into energy. When you improve breathing, the health of each and every cell is enhanced.

Breathing is also closely linked to the mind and emotions. Think of the last time you were angry, fearful, or anxious. Chances are your breath was rapid, shallow, and irregular. Contrast that with the smooth and free breath that accompanies moments of calm and peace. Such breathing sends a powerful message to the body that "all is well," stimulating the relaxation response, which lowers blood pressure, decreases heart rate, improves immune response, and produces the alpha brain waves associated with ease and creativity.

Although breathing exercises or pranayama have been integral components of yoga for thousands of years, scientists are only just beginning to study the links between breath and health. Nonetheless, they have already made several interesting discoveries.

According to one study, practicing a slow breathing exercise daily for three months increased the activity of the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for many tasks associated with health maintenance and healing. (Indian Journal of Medical Research, 2004)
Another study assessed the physiological effects of breathing exclusively through the right nostril, a traditional form of pranayama. It was found that right-nostril breathing for 45 minutes a day increased oxygen consumption and blood pressure and had a stimulating effect on body and mind. This effect has been used by some people to alleviate symptoms of depression. (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 1996) For more information about this study, see Amy Weintraub’s book, Yoga for Depression: A Compassionate Guide to Relieve Suffering Through Yoga.
In a promising study conducted by the Northern Colorado Allergy Asthma Clinic, asthmatics who learned yogic breathing and relaxation techniques reported greater relaxation, positive mental attitude, better exercise tolerance, and decreased usage of beta-adrenergic inhalers.
A 2002 Indian study showed that yogic breathing exercises significantly decreased the level of free radicals in the body, which have been linked to disease-causing processes.
Even a few minutes of natural breathing can ease tension, elevate your mood, and sharpen your mind. It is easy to experience this for yourself right now. Sit up tall and let your gaze grow soft. Relax your belly and allow the breath to flow freely and naturally. Consciously smooth out your breath, shifting easily between inhalations and exhalations, gradually finding your own rhythm. Breathing in this way, you are likely to find that your breath naturally deepens. Let this happen as you release any tensions that inhibit an easy flow of breath. Continue for three minutes and pay close attention to how your body feels after this simple act of focused breathing.

Eat, Love & Pray is such a great book!!!

I am reading this book for the 2nd time, well, actually, I don't really have time to read, so i download books from itunes, that way I can walk on the beach in the mornings and listen to books to make the time pass. Anyway, I am enjoying it so much, if you have not read it yet, please do. Elizabeth Gilbert is such an awsome writer. She really puts life as a thirty or forty something woman in perspective. I almost feel like I am living the adveture of traveling to Italy, India and Indonisia through her. I have a dream of traveling, and someday I will. It will be on my next trasure map for sure. Speaking of India- this is a yoga site, so a few words about my own personal yoga practice. I find that when I am not doing Yoga I have to remind myself to breathe!!! Of course I breathe to live, but to REALLY Breathe feels so good. I am often reminding my classes to breathe during class, and throughout our practice, and, so I will be my own teacher today and repeat my own mantra
"breathe girl...breathe!!!"
Until next time.....
Just Breathe.

Heather's Kripalu Yoga Class Descriptions

I teach Kripalu Yoga: A free flowing form of yoga postures that is as much of a meditation as it is a series of yoga movements and asanas. This style of yoga supports relaxation, peace, and healing. Each of my yoga classes last approximately 70 minutes.

Tuesday & Wednesdays at 10:00 AM – Kripalu Yoga
This is my most common class which is also scheduled on Wednesday & Saturday Mornings at 10AM. This class can be gentle enough for beginners, and at times challenging enough for someone who enjoys a gentle yoga practice. I gauge all classes according to who shows. I learned years ago the importance of being mindful of new yoga students. There are always the modifications of the postures for those who need it. My wish is for each student to listen closely to their body and never go past the “edge”.

Thursday 6 PM – Introduction to Kripalu Yoga

This is a great class for brand new students OR for those returning to yoga after an extended period of time OR for students who a recovering from an injury or illness that would like to find modifications for the basic yoga postures. This is usually an 8 week series that is on going. We take time to practice Sun-Salutations and basic postures in between each series. Students can join in at any time .

Friday 10 AM – YogAromatherapy
This I am proud to say in my own creation. I recently took a certification for Aromatherapy. I offer Aromatherapy Consultations along with Aromatherapy Massage…as you can tell I love the scents of essential oils and the benefits they offer us for healing. The class is one of my most gentle Yoga classes with a focus on the 7 chakras, which are energy centers located along the spine in our body. This class has a great energy, very calm, meditative and fun too!

Saturdays at 10:00 am
I teach a Multi Level Kripalu Yoga Class every other week, on the off weeks there is either Marci or Laura. Both teachers are great!
Feel free to visit my website or call with questions or concerns.
Class Fee is $10 each or 10 classes for $80 Heather Hixon, LMT, CYT (904) 521-4845 Located at the Renaissance Healing Center, 228 3rd Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach

Yoga and Aromatherapy

This week I am excited about a new aromatherapy blend I made for my clients. It is for anti-anxiety. The scent is AMAzing! Lavender, Patchuli and Sweet Orange. It is very uplifting yet at the same time relaxing enough to use towards the end of our yoga classes for Sivasana. The Patchuli promotes a sense of peace and well-being.
Did you know that you can book an aromatherapy consultation with me, blend a few essential oils to make your very own blend and take it with you for your home yoga practice, a salt bath, an inhaler stick, a pillow spray or a lotion just to name a few...It only costs $30. Just call me to book your appointment!
Try my YogAromatherapy class on Friday mornings at 10am ...(Gentle Yoga)
Check out our website for all of my class descriptions:

Yoga Mala Event at our Renaissance Healing Center

Thank you to those who participated in our event! We got through 108 Sun- Salutations with grace and fun too! It felt really good to raise money for such an amazing organization such as The Nature Conservancy. To find out about how you can help support this cause please go to www.nature.org
Yoga has really made such a difference in my life and I have watched over the years, the changes happen for my students as well. Someone last night said that her heart felt so open after our practice, our closing meditation was about the light surrounding the heart and radiating out...this is what yoga does for me every day. I only wish for more people to find the path to yoga or something like it...just find a path to open your heart.
Until next time,
Take time to unwind,
Namaste'
